Being a fairly huge geek, and not being the type to really write lyrics to anything, I relied on math to help me out. So I took the wordpress logo… did some measurements

The height of the W is about 160 pixels the width of the W at the lowest point is 95, 174 at the highest point. The diameter of the circle surrounding the W  is 227 pixels and lastly the area of circle is  40470 (square pixels) and the circumference is 713 pixels. I also used the hexadecimal number for the color grey used in the logo (464646). I took all these measurements and calculations and pretended like the numbers were hertz tones. Then I found out what note each represented (I had to divide some of the numbers down into the audible range, and I decided not to worry about what octave the note was in). Surprisingly the notes I had to use were D♯, F♯, F, and A♯ (some of them were repeated). Then I played around a good deal. I first tried some guitar chords, but I didn’t like any chord progreshion using those chords. So i went for my keyboard and just started playing around with the notes in different orders and such until I found something I liked. Apparently i’m in a bit of a outerspace mood right now, because what I ended up with is some kind of weird enya space ambient house techno (or something like that). So the four notes comprise the background chords for the song, everything I played ontop of that strayed a little from those. My take on it is that wordpress represents the real backbone of this bloging community, and all the blogers are the embellishments… that make it interesting, fun and creative. So I felt it was fitting. Anyhow, I had a fun time and at the very least hope my entry will encourage people to think outside of the box a bit.

So I have been recording, and playing with new ideas and such. However, Jacob is usually the one who does all the techy stuff, but he is to gosh darn busy. He’s even to busy to teach me. So today I have decided to figure it out! Hurray! Ok, ok. I think I got it….maybe….sorta. This is another co-written song. Jacob came up with the tune a while ago. Actually, he started playing it when we found out our friend Darin had died. And I started singing. Yesterday, I put more words to it, and it is definitely a rough draft. So…this is “Darin’s Song”.  I think Jacob has a completely different idea for this tune, and I think it will be interesting to explore that. I think we will end up with two versions.

What I think a lot of people forget when promoting something, is that there are thousands upon thousands of people, that use networking sites outside of the the two giants. I haven’t even really begun to delve into that pit of despair (I managed to make a profile on reverbnation). Jokes aside, I do find it quite interesting that there are so many different communities out there. My hope is that I can create a presence in a lot of them and have the bulk of our content in them stream in from the few sources I am most familiar with. I guess we shall see how that works out.

Do any of you have networks or sites where you like to find artists and musicians from? What are they? Where do you think we should make a presence? Does it annoy you when an artist or band has too many sites? Do you even think it matters?  We’d love to hear your opinions on the matter.

It’s always hard for me to start things. When exactly was the beginning of this? I really have no idea actually, and I feel if I try to trace my steps back I’ll bore everyone to death. So I think the best place to start is our first song.

I don’t know much when it comes to recording, but I started playing around with a multi-track recorder (audacity) a while back with so so results. My creation process with one particular song involved laying down a simple repeating guitar line. I then added some other parts on top… and proceeded to forget about it for some time. Audrey was listening to that recording a few days ago with me and afterwords said she wanted to write a song using the guitar part from that song… changing it a bit. She had this neat idea for a bit of chorus and this morning when I woke up she had the entire song written. We played around with it a little, I came up with some beginnings of a clarinet part and then we decided it best to make a simple recording of what we had so far. Below is the result:

We obviously had some trouble with the recording equipment, we are using an absolutely horrible microphone for recording music. We also still need to work on timing, I want my clarinet part to move with her vocal part a lot more. Well, I could go on about all the imperfections, but I think we have something great to start with.

So today has been a big day for us. We co-wrote our first song, decided on a band name, and did some preliminary recording.  As we were listening to our recording efforts, our hearts momentarily sank. I discovered that I am rhythmically challenged, and our recording seemed to contain the occasional random flare of distortion, due to a complete lack of decent recording equipment.  After the first listening, we steadfastly agreed that our talents were just to raw  to be unleashed onto any other humans. However, further consideration lead us to the decision that we didn’t give a hoot, and that we wanted to share our journey from yuck to fantastic. Haven’t you always wanted to know what your favorite artists sounded like in the beginning? Well this is your chance.  This blog will be a documentation of our process. We will put up songs  as we create them, fine tune them, rip them apart and stick new appendages on them, bits of musical ideas, experiments, forays with instruments we have no idea how to play, and so forth. Eventually, we will post polished songs and videos so that you will be able to view our progress and creativity in action. Cool huh? Well we think so. We invite you to join us on our little experiment. Our first effort is a song called “1-2-3.”  Jacob actually came up with this tune, and laid down some ideas some months back. I decided to play with it the other day, and came up with the  “1-2-3 chorus” bit, and wrote the lyrics this morning. I still hear more in my head, so I am anxious to keep playing with it….and working on my rhythm. More to come, and I hope you enjoy!
